The human brain is full of complex mechanisms. The speed at which a normal brain processes is way faster than that of supercomputers. However, with continuous wear and tear brain becomes more susceptible to less efficient working. It is known that brain undergoes various changes in a lifetime and brain aging is a natural process. One might face reduced brain function, decline in memory and difficulty in learning as they grow older.

However, certain lifestyle amendments or introduction of newer ones can help in retaining healthy brain functions. One of them is drinking green tea. If you drink green tea regularly, then you are already helping your brain in retaining all the memories & healthy cognitive functions. 
Green tea contains much lesser caffeine than coffee but it is to produce an effect. Green tea contains an amino acid known as L-theanine, which is able to cross the blood-brain barrier. It jump-starts the activity of an inhibitory neurotransmitter called GABA, that has anti-anxiety effects. It leads to a release in dopamine along with alpha waves in the brain.  
The combination of caffeine and L-theanine is extremely potent means of improving brain functions and can have synergistic effects. Hence, green tea may also protect the brain from damage in old age.

1. It prevents the formation of plaque 

2. It breaks down existing plaque

3. Creates new neurons in the brain 

This is how green tea has proven effective in boosting mental function and prevent brain from further damage during aging.
